Reviews for Checkmate, an RCMP Mystery E-Book Set in Hungary
Checkmate
Suspense/Intrigue

The award winning authors of BODY TRAFFIC, a novel short-listed for the Margaret Laurence Book Award, have again gifted readers with a powerhouse of a sequel in CHECKMATE.
Stan Boyko, a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman, and his lovely wife Sonja, a young woman he rescued from the sex trade, are honeymooning in Hungary, her native land. But the present is always influenced by the past, a truth that affects them both.
Sonja harbors hopes of finding her brother, Feri, an addict who sold her into slavery, but as she and her husband pursue that quest, a figure from the darkest side of Sonja's past unavoidably becomes part of the mission. For Stan, an urgent call from the Canadian Embassy pressures him to combine work with pleasure, a seemingly harmless side-trip that involves classified paperwork with the potential to embarrass the royal family on an international level, but it quickly becomes an excursion into the dangerous unknown.
These authors have a flair for creating unique, exciting characters and a knack for placing them in global settings: Allan Howland, an alcoholic, washed up American reporter intent upon reviving his career at any cost; McCartney, a British spy from WWII whose hidden papers can provide Howland with that story; Sipos Sandor, a Gypsy gangster, involved in drugs, illegal arms and smuggling; Janos and Anna, a Hungarian couple familiar with both war and the long-term aftermath.
This story was a pleasure to read in every sense of the word, right up to the surprising and gratifying last sentence. Tightly written and expertly woven, CHECKMATE brings to life the realities of illegal arms deals, the power of love to precipitate change, the exquisite consequences of timing, and how life and death, success or failure, can hinge on a few missing pages from a Chess manual.
CHECKMATE is another great story from a pair of great authors. I highly recommend it.
