Ten Chocolates from the Box Authors: Alex Domokos and Rita Y. Toews Publisher: Writers Exchange E-Publishing Genre: Short non-fiction Evaluation: Absolutely scrumptious When was the last time you put a piece of solid milk chocolate in your mouth, and allowed it slowly to melt? Not any kind of chocolate will suffice. Only the chocolates made with dairy butter and heavy cream can quench the connoisseurs taste buds. Quickly crunching the sweet confection away is good, and satisfies the immediate craving, but leisurely savoring the creaminess is a treasure. A good story has the same kind of effect, especially stories rich with wisdom. Ten Chocolates from the Box is a perfect mix of stories creatively written from the authors' imagination. "A Tribute to Parents" begins by weaving the fabric for an appreciation of not only our parents, but for the elderly. "Night Ride" transports the reader into the subway car with effortless detail. We sit and watch the scene with the beggar trying to pick up the coins with his arthritic fingers. And, "Spring Treasures" invites an exploration of new meanings for things which we generally take for the face value. Rita Toews and Alex Domokos bring life to ordinary experiences. They flavor these short stories with the kind of chocolate-covered raspberry cream or hazelnut praline filling, which invites you to appreciate life and living. The insight and descriptiveness of the characters are very real, and remind me of similar moments in my life. If you are looking for a rich dessert after your supper, pick up Ten Chocolates from the Box, sit back and enjoy. Note: This is the shortest story. by Rita Toews My mother passed away recently. She was a beautiful, vibrant woman who, at the age of seventy-one, should have had many more years to enjoy both life and the love of her family. I went through all the emotions of a person who is losing someone they love deeply: disbelief, shock, anger, grief and an overwhelming sense of loss. I was losing the person who had given me life and nurture; a companion and a friend. I felt as though a part of me was about to die. Not long after we discovered she was ill with cancer I took my mother to a lecture being given by an individual she admired. He spoke briefly about butterflies. It seems that a certain species of butterfly will migrate from Canada to Mexico, mate and lay their eggs and then die. When the young mature they migrate back to Canada to the same area, the same tree and the same twig that the parent had inhabited. We were both fascinated by the habits of the butterfly and marvelled that the adult was able to pass certain knowledge and abilities to their offspring. The wonders of migration patterns was only one ability that we humans knew of, perhaps there were others that we still didn't understand or comprehend. As her illness rapidly progressed mother was confined to bed in a room with a patio door that overlooked the backyard. Throughout the day nature was her companion when a family member wasn't sitting with her. Among nature's companions were the butterflies. I began to notice that butterflies started turning up regularly in my life as well. One afternoon, overcome with frustration and grief, I found myself in the bathroom wrestling with my emotions. I realized that I was gazing at a butterfly in the wallpaper and suddenly a calm descended on me. A visiting friend arrived with a gift for mother. It was the only stained-glass piece in the shop of appropriate size he explained, as he presented the beautiful glass butterfly suspended on a filament line. Butterflies accompanied me on my evening walks. Mother passed away without a murmur of complaint; at peace with her maker and herself. After her memorial service her friends and family gathered on the church patio for refreshments. Wrapped in the grief of her loss, I moved away from the crush of people to the far end of the patio and as I stood there, a butterfly fluttered towards me. It hovered near me for a moment as though passing a word of comfort and reassurance before it continued on its journey. At that moment I realized my mother had not left me. She's in my bones and fibres, in t he very essence of my being. She's in the things she's taught me and the places we've been together. Like the butterfly and it's young, my mother has given me more than life. She is part of me; she will always be with me. That was the message of love from the butterfly and my mother that afternoon. www.electronicbookreviews.com Cheryl McCann Ten Chocolates from the Box by Rita Toews and Alex Domokos ebook is composed of 10 adult experience short stories.
